The Italian Espresso Hack You Need to Try
How to Make Coffee in a Moka Pot
@jameshoffmann has been a friend of ChefSteps for years! He taught Grant his Moka Pot Technique almost a decade ago. But great coffee doesn't change much right?
An Italian classic, perfected. The Moka pot is a timeless way to make rich, flavorful coffee at home — sitting somewhere between a double espresso and a drip brew. With a few small tweaks, you can turn this simple tool into your new morning essential.
Here’s how we do it:
1. Grind whole beans to a medium-fine consistency.
2. Fill the basket evenly (don’t compact it).
3. Add boiled water to the base, just below the safety valve.
4. Assemble and heat over medium-low, lid open.
5. When you hear the gurgle, remove from heat and run the base under cold water to stop extraction.
You can drink it straight or turn it into a silky latte — just don’t underestimate the flavor this little pot can deliver.
