Against the Tyranny of Outcomes: a conversation with Paul Hurley
Dr. Ellie Anderson interviews Dr. Paul Hurley, Edward J. Sexton Professor of Philosophy at Claremont McKenna College to discuss his recent book, Against the Tyranny of Outcomes (Oxford University Press, 2024). They dive into Hurley's analysis and critique of consequentialist ethical theory and what he calls the "tyranny of outcomes" in contemporary academic philosophy: What is consequentialism? Why is intuitively appealing in popular forms such as utilitarianism, and why does it fail? How do outcome-centered ethical frameworks understand actions like lying or voting?
