Reading for Lakou consciousness (or, what your reading practice is missing)
Reading isn't always about looking for what's familiar.
Often, voices and conversations are overlooked when we don't know how to listen to what they're telling us. In her latest academic book, Autochthonomies, Myriam J. A. Chancy, Professor of the Humanities at Scripps College, guides us towards a new approach to reading that can face texts on their own terms.
In this video, we walk you through some of the key concepts and ideas from the book. What do appropriation and misreading really mean? What overlooked conversations do we discover when we look at Afrodiasporic retentions in Black writers? And how might we push beyond a world marked by races and colors, into recognizing the cultural heritage that lies beyond the West?
