Ashley Peters, 23, left California for Japan and can finally afford to live alone.
In the U.S., she’d never be able to afford something like this on her own, says Peter. In Japan, it felt attainable, even comfortable, on her 277,500 yen (about $1,800) a month teaching salary. The cost of living surprised her in other ways, too.
