In 1986, the residents of a Cameroonian village called Nyos experienced a natural disaster that had only happened one other time in recorded history. Their local lake expelled a gigantic cloud of CO2 gas, killing roughly 1800 people. But over the decades, scientists and engineers have worked out a solution to prevent something similar from happening again.
