Bosnia's hidden landmines | DW Documentary
In early 2026, Finland officially left the Ottawa Treaty, allowing it to buy and stockpile landmines again – a move criticized by human rights groups. Poland, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania have also exited the treaty, citing security concerns over neighboring Russia.
First adopted in 1997, the Ottawa Treaty bans the production, stockpiling and use of anti-personnel landmines. More than 160 countries are party to the agreement.
During the Bosnian War (1992-1995), hundreds of thousands of landmines were scattered across the country. Since the end of the war, more than 1,700 people have been victims of landmines in Bosnia, 600 of whom died.
Mine-detection dogs are one way to help clear mines, making the land safe for local communities to use again.
