Modern slavery at sea? | DW Documentary
Human rights abuses have been reported in the tuna industry, with working conditions described by some as modern slavery. This forced labor has also been linked to illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing practices.
Officially, these fishing boats in the Indian Ocean are fishing for tuna. But sailors say they also illegally catch endangered species. They cut off the fins of sharks to sell them at high prices and dump the live animals back into the ocean.
NGOs and advocates are pushing for tougher regulations to stop poor working conditions, but enforcing labor laws at sea remains a major challenge.
