Making the golden haloes from Botticelli’s workshop sparkle | National Gallery
How has UV light been used to help restore original golden haloes and what is the significance of the pomegranate in this painting? Hear the answers from Conservator Valeriia Kravchenko and Curator Laura Llewellyn.
See how the cleaning of ‘The Virgin and Child with a Pomegranate’ revealed a dramatic colour transformation, and how hidden gilding designs were uncovered when we looked closely in our Conservation studio.
Then follow Valeriia as she carefully adds new gold to the places where it was lost, making the painting sparkle again, just as the workshop of Botticelli meant it to.
