The Greenland Glacier Mission to Measure Melt From Below | SLICE EARTH | FULL DOC
On Greenland’s Petermann Glacier, a scientific team lands on a floating tongue of ice to study what is happening far beneath the surface. Their goal is to reach the seawater below the glacier and measure how ocean water is driving melt from underneath, one of the least visible but most important processes shaping Greenland’s ice.
This documentary follows the expedition as the team navigates crevasses, sets up camp on the ice, and deploys instruments to profile temperature, salinity, depth, and the hidden cavity below the glacier. With sonar, ocean sensors, and a small robotic system, they push into a place where direct measurements are rare, difficult, and essential to understanding glacier melt and future sea-level rise.
