Wild Menorca: The Fragile Balance of a Mediterranean Refuge | SLICE EARTH | FULL DOC
Menorca’s wildlife connects rocky islets, forests, wetlands and underwater meadows across the seasons. On this Mediterranean island, a biosphere reserve shelters endemic species and welcomes migrating birds. Lizards disperse the seeds of a rare shrub, while offshore, fish seek shelter and spawning grounds among Posidonia seagrass.
These meadows also help protect the beaches, linking marine life to the island’s shores. Yet protection does not remove the effects of human activity: overfishing has altered underwater ecosystems, boat anchors damage seagrass, and tourism has pushed bee-eaters toward inland nesting sites. Maintaining this refuge means managing the human activities that continue to shape its habitats.
