Your location isn’t private | DW Documentary
Why do data brokers have your location data? And what do they use it for?
One big reason is advertising. Data brokers collect location data from people around the world and sell it to advertising companies who use it to create highly targeted ads.
This data comes from everyday apps on your phone, like maps, games, dating apps, and weather apps. The apps often collect this information to improve their services, but it can also end up in a global network of data brokers.
One main issue is that this data can be extremely detailed, showing where people live, work, and spend their free time. With this information, discerning a person's identity can be surprisingly easy, which can pose a serious security risk.
Although the trade in location data is regulated in certain places, like the EU, advertising companies and data brokers still find ways to access and use citizens' personal data.
