The official death toll stands at 188 with more than 1,500 injured. Many more are feared to have died, with over 30,000 reported missing.
The first hit the area west to the Venezuelan capital Caracas at just after 6pm Wednesday night, on a holiday when much of the country was at home. Before the first tremor, with a magnitude of 7.2, was even over, another occurred that was even stronger.
Some buildings collapsed like pancakes and the capital's airport was badly hit.
One official said 250 buildings had been damaged or destroyed while rescuers have spent all day searching through the rubble and the entire area has been declared a disaster zone.
Venezuela's acting president Delcy Rodriguez has appealed for international help. Donald Trump, who has become Venezuela's best friend ever since he abducted its president in January, has offered instant emergency help.
