Why did politicians try to ban some cartoons?
In 1903, cartoonists kept depicting Pennsylvania politician Samuel Pennypacker as a parrot. The solution? Introduce a bill banning any cartoon in which a person is depicted as a, “beast, bird, fish, insect, or other inhuman animal.”
Turns out, people who make fun of politicians for a living are comfortable fighting back against politicians. Criticism of Pennypacker was so humiliating, the law was repealed after he left office. #history #comedy #cartoons
