Is an income tax necessary?
Did you know the income tax didn't always exist?
In the early 1900s, a lot of people supported the idea of an income tax. They said it would help raise money for those in need and finance America's military power.
In 1909, politicians tried attaching an income tax to a tariffs bill, but to defeat this, opponents suggested a constitutional amendment instead. Three-fourths of the states agreed to it, and in 1916 the 16th Amendment became law of the land. #history #historytime #UShistory #taxes #taxday
