Nearly 80 years after the original 2CV first appeared, Citroën is bringing back one of the most iconic names in motoring with a new small electric car inspired by the legendary French original.
And yes, we've brought an egg.
The original 2CV was designed to carry four people and 50kg of luggage across rural France, while being cheap, practical, easy to maintain and – crucially – comfortable enough to cross a freshly ploughed field without breaking a basket of eggs.
Citroën says the new car isn't supposed to be a retro copy of the old 2CV. Instead, it's trying to recreate the same philosophy: simple, affordable, practical and comfortable electric transport.
The concept is just 3.76 metres long and features some fantastic details inspired by the original, including its upright shape, round headlights, huge steel wheels, split-tailgate design and plenty of hidden 2CV Easter eggs.
Inside, things are deliberately simple, with a single-spoke steering wheel, an eight-inch touchscreen, a minimalist dashboard, clever storage and even a removable Radioën speaker. And yes, there are special pockets designed to carry eggs.
The production car is expected in 2028, with Citroën targeting a price of less than €15,000 before subsidies – potentially making this one of Europe's most affordable electric cars.
We don't yet know the final battery size, range, performance or charging speed, but Citroën is clearly prioritising low weight, simplicity and affordability rather than turning the 2CV into another high-performance EV.
So, has Citroën captured the spirit of the original 2CV?
And, most importantly… will it pass the egg test?
