Alpine is bringing back a legendary name – but the new A310 Concept is a very different beast from the original rear-engined, V6-powered sports car. So what happens when you take Alpine's lightweight, driver-focused philosophy and combine it with an all-electric future?
In this walkaround, we take a closer look at the Alpine A310 Concept and explore the thinking behind it. At its heart is Alpine's new Alpine Performance Platform (APP), a set of building blocks designed to underpin a new generation of electric performance cars.
We're talking twin-motor torque vectoring, 800-volt ultra-fast charging and a serious focus on keeping weight down. The same platform will help shape the next-generation Alpine A110 and the spectacular Renault 5 Turbo 3E. And with this flexible architecture, Alpine could potentially build anything from two-seat sports cars to 2+2 coupés and convertibles.
But can Alpine make electric cars that deliver the same magic as its petrol-powered predecessors?
The original A310 evolved from a slightly underwhelming four-cylinder sports car into a proper performance contender with a 2.6-litre V6. Its rear-mounted engine, fibreglass body and lightweight construction gave it a character all of its own – even if its handling could keep drivers on their toes.
Now, Alpine is looking to carry that spirit into the electric age. And if this concept is anything to go by, the future could be very interesting indeed.
