Learn how to create stylized, painterly grass in Blender using an updated workflow for 2026. In this tutorial, we'll build the grass from scratch, scatter it procedurally, match it to the colors of your environment, and add subtle animation to bring the scene to life.
Blender's newer scattering and Geometry Nodes tools make stylized grass much easier to create and control, so I wanted to revisit this technique with a simpler, more modern workflow.
We'll cover creating the individual grass cards, building a procedural Scatter on Surface system, controlling density and placement, animating the grass with Geometry Nodes, and creating a material that allows the grass to inherit the color and texture of the terrain underneath it.
Finally, we'll add a custom brush texture to break up the grass blades and give the entire scene a more handcrafted, painterly appearance.
This workflow is great for stylized environments, cozy fantasy scenes, animation, NPR artwork, and lightweight environments where you want dense grass without relying on complicated simulation or modeling setups.
