This little box in the key of E is one of the most useful spots on the whole neck for riffs and rhythm playing. It centers around the open low E and runs up through frets 5 and 7 on the E, A, and D strings, with a natural spot to throw in a bluesy slide on the D string.
What makes this position so rich is everything that lives at that seventh fret. You've got a classic E7 right there, the E7 sharp 9 which is that Hendrix chord, and the E9 for a James Brown style funk thing. Three completely different flavors, all from the same spot.
