The Northeast of the United States has a fascinating population quirk: while it's home to nearly 53 million people, the vast majority live in the southern half. This leaves the deep northeast as one of the least densely populated parts of the country, but with the odd distinction of being within the most densely populated region of the country. So what's going on? Why do so few people live in Upstate New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine when tens of millions live right next door in the rest of New York, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Jersey and eastern Pennsylvania?
In this video, we'll uncover the vast and untamed geography of the Deep Northeast of the United States and how it contrasts with the rest of the region. Then we'll dive into the history of how this region developed through the decades. Finally, we'll answer the question by bringing geography, history and current events together to figure out why almost nobody lives in the Deep Northeast.
