One of the greatest roadtrips in the world traverses 19,000 miles of highway, from Alaska to Argentina, connecting an entire hemisphere. Except for one gap. Remote, rural, dangerous:  the Darian Gap stretches 60 miles (96 kilometres) between Panama and Colombia. It’s a hole in the map, seemingly endless green and with no asphalt in sight. Some blame the cartels. Others blame the rain. But the real reason this road was never built? The United States didn’t want it.
