Canada has a number of major cities. From Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa in the east to Vancouver all the way on the west coast, the country is well represented. But did you know that there's another city that SHOULD have become Canada's first major city AND political heart? Sitting at the mouth of the Saint Lawrence River on Lake Ontario is the small city of Kingston. At one point, this city was destined to be both the capital of the country, and Canada's economic engine. But, due to a combination of history and geography, the city mostly fell by the wayside, as Toronto and Ottawa took over.
In this video, we'll cover the geography of southern Ontario and Lake Ontario, why Kingston was so prominent in Canada's early history and why it was chosen as Canada's first capital, and then why Kingston lost all its momentum to nearby Toronto and Ottawa. It's a fascinating story of how geography and history can make or break a city's chances.
