When we look at a population map of the United States, our eyes are naturally drawn to the bright, sprawling clusters of light along the coasts and the Great Lakes. But in the heart of the country lies a curious void, a vast expanse that seems to have been skipped over by the forces of settlement. This region, stretching across most of Iowa and Wisconsin and touching the edges of Minnesota, Illinois, Missouri and Michigan, can be thought of as the "Empty Midwest." But here’s where it gets weird because there isn't a desert or an impassable mountain range; in fact, this region contains some of the most productive land on the planet. So why do so few people live in such a uniquely productive stretch of land?
