Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has welcomed a plan to make Canada the EU’s first “associate member”. But it hasn’t gone down well with Donald Trump.

Carney declared to the European Parliament that his country and Europe are “stronger together” as he tries to fashion a new world order.
While Trump threatened to impose "very serious" tariffs if the partnership went ahead, Carney insisted that no one could tell his country who they could strike agreements with.
Freedom and sovereignty were at stake, he said, in a speech that sounded more like a declaration of independence.
