Prichard Colon has died at the age of 33, nearly eleven years after a fight against Terrel Williams left him with a catastrophic brain injury. Tony Jeffries, Olympic medalist boxer breaks down exactly what happened during Colon's 2015 fight against Terrel Williams, the illegal blows that caused it and why boxing still has not learned from it.
Colon was an undefeated prospect with a 16-0 record when Williams repeatedly hit him with illegal punches to the back of the head. Blows that stretch and tear the tiny blood vessels in the brain which Tony explains can be even more dangerous than a shot to the front of the head. He complained of dizziness partway through the fight but the ringside doctor cleared him to continue anyway. Colon collapsed in the dressing room afterward and spent 220 days in a coma following emergency surgery for a brain hemorrhage before waking up in what doctors called a severely disabled state that lasted the rest of his life. Tony also connects this tragedy to a wider problem in boxing gyms today, where unsupervised hard sparring sessions cause a huge amount of the brain damage fighters carry long after they retire.
