Tony Jeffries and Coach Frank debates on old school vs modern boxing equipment. Coach Frank Gilfeather admits he could not even close his fist the first time he tried a modern sparring glove. Tony Jeffries, Olympic medalist boxer, explains why sparring gloves now come bigger and more padded than old gloves, built specifically to protect your hands through repeated live sparring.
Breaking Down Boxing Gloves:
Old school vs modern gloves: Frank could not even close his fist the first time he tried a modern sparring glove, since a small piece of elastic inside dictates exactly where your thumb sits, a big change from the thin, loosely padded gloves he grew up boxing in.
Why sparring gloves are bigger: Tony explains the extra size and padding is built specifically to protect your hands through the repeated impact of live sparring and heavy bag rounds.
The mouthpiece tip: wear your mouthpiece during bag work and shadow boxing before you ever spar, since breathing with one in feels completely different, and getting comfortable with it early removes one more thing to feel nervous about on your first day sparring.
Thumb position: making a fist with a bare hand naturally tucks your thumb underneath, but inside a sparring glove, your thumb sits in a completely different spot, closer to how fighters like Muhammad Ali once threw punches when gloves left the thumb completely free.
