The Dew-Point Rule for Cargo Ventilation
If the outside air has a lower dew point than the air in the hold, ventilation is beneficial and the vents can be opened. If outside dew point is higher, that incoming air carries moisture that will make condensation damage worse.
On some cold-to-tropical voyages, the outside air remains too humid throughout the passage. In that case, the crew may have to keep the hold sealed, monitor the readings, and accept that some moisture damage cannot be avoided.
