Why “Always Ventilate” Is Dangerous Advice
When ship sweat is the threat, ventilation can help by replacing damp hold air with drier outside air. Less moisture inside the hold means less water available to condense onto cold steel above the cargo.
But that same action can be disastrous during a cargo-sweat voyage. Bringing warm, humid outside air into a hold containing cold cargo creates more condensation, so crews must identify the exact risk before opening a vent.
