Why Sailboats Need a Heavy Keel
A deep keel puts heavy material, such as lead, iron, or ballast—far below the floating hull. That lowers the vessel’s centre of gravity while buoyancy acts higher up, creating a natural righting effect when the boat leans.
This is called weight stability. It is especially important for sailing yachts and submarines, where keeping mass low is the most direct way to keep the vessel upright.
