Two Thermometers Can Save a Cargo
The safe decision depends on comparing the dew point of outside air with the dew point of air inside the hold. To find it, crews use a psychrometer: two thermometers mounted together, with one bulb covered by a wet cloth.
As air passes over the wet bulb, evaporation cools it. The difference between the dry and wet readings shows how much moisture is in the air, allowing the crew to calculate its dew point.
