A powerful earthquake hit several Colombian cities, including the capital Bogotá on Monday morning. The number of dead is climbing rapidly as rescue workers dig through the rubble.

The earthquake measured 7.4 during the mid-morning rush hour and lasted several minutes. A number of cities were hit in a broad crescent of destruction from the capital Bogota, to the centre of coffee production in Pereira and the city of Cali, a bustling urban sprawl of three million people.
Colombia's government has declared a national emergency and at least 82 people have been killed, while officials said people were still trapped under the rubble of collapsed buildings.
