Fiat 500 was launched in 2007. It turned out to be a hit. The new Fiat 500 leaned on nostalgia and retro styling, but at the same time it remained relatively inexpensive, especially since its only real competitor at launch was the MINI hatch. Citroen launched the DS3 a year after the 500, and it was advertised as anti-retro.
Initially Fiat offered a lot of customisation options - they said a total of around 500 thousand combinations of the engine, color, livery, upholstery, and even key fob cover were available. Nowadays Fiat turned customisation down a notch or two, but it still launches special editions every now and then.
In 2016 Fiat gave the 500 a facelift. The changes were cosmetic. The current model has a newer infotainment and a new engine. Fiat got rid of the Twinair, the Fire and the Multijet, and replaced them with the FireFly - a 3-cylinder 1.0 litre unit producing 70 hp with mild hybrid.
