You don't have to play a D chord the same way every time. Three small moves can completely change the character of the chord without making things complicated, even if you're just starting out.
The first is hammering onto the second fret high E with your middle finger, which gives it a little melodic lift. The second is hammering the second fret G with your index finger for a slightly different color. The third is a quick little trill on the third fret high E with your pinky, which has that Jeff Buckley kind of feel to it.
None of these require any extra chord knowledge.
Just start with your D shape and let one finger do something interesting.
