Earthquakes are the scariest natural disaster in my opinion. They strike without much warning, cause devastating damage, and can literally turn solid ground into a liquid. But that doesn't mean they can strike just anywhere. In fact, most earthquakes hit in just a few key regions of the world meaning most people are safe! Those that do live in those region, however, are usually in for a bumpy ride.
In this video, we cover the five most infamous earthquakes in modern history, what their impacts were, and what they felt like:
Christchurch, New Zealand
Northridge, California
Port-au-Prince, Haiti
Turkey and Syria
Tohoku, Japan
And yes, I know I left out the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake. I did so for two reasons. First, while the earthquake was strong, that story really lies with the tsunami that came afterwards. Tohoku also had a tsunami but the earthquake itself was still damaging in a way that the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake was not. Second, this is also a topic that I feel would require its own, full video to cover appropriately because the geographic impacts were felt very far and very wide.
