Prime Minister Andy Burnham has ordered a new push to find and punish criminal gangs profiting from illegal waste dumps. Local authorities will be given new powers to seize assets, and the fines for waste offences will rise. Following work to clear an illegal dump alongside the River Cherwell, Burnham has also promised that three illegal waste dump sites in Kent, Surrey and West Yorkshire will now be cleared.
