The ship, the MV Hondius, is now stranded at sea as a plan to dock it in the Canary Islands was rebuffed by the region's president amid fears of the hantavirus spreading further.
The World Health Organisation confirmed the 'Andes' strain of hantavirus was behind the outbreak.
Health experts say the disease is "very, very rare" and the UK government said the risk to the wider UK population was "very low".
