Do A Lot With A Little On The Piano (4 Chords and 5 Easy Techniques)
Seven Studies in Pop Piano: https://www.billspianopages.com/seven-studies
People often think that making great music means making complicated music, and that’s not true at all — especially on the piano. This tutorial is all about how to do a lot with a little: take just four chords and, by using some easy techniques, turn them into a professional-sounding piano solo in a pop piano, ballad style.
The chords we’re going to use are F, Gm7, Bb and C7 — a I, ii, IV, V progression in the key of F major. From that foundation, it’s just a case of finding a good rhythm to play in, and then adapting the chords in subtle, simple ways to create interest and complexity — usually by actually doing less, rather than more. By moving your hands less when you play the piano, and avoiding simply jumping from chord to chord, you can create rich and interesting suspensions, chord decorations and polychords. Combine those sounds with the right kind of rhythmic variations and you have the makings of a cool piano solo.
