Another classic saying deeply relevant to musicians, songwriters and composers: "rules are for the guidance of the wise and the obedience of fools". It DOESN'T mean rules are for idiots; it means rules are there to help you. So if you're just starting out, it pays to learn about the rules of playing your instrument and music theory and all the rest, because it gives you a framework to learn within. Once you've got some experience as a musician, you can start to use the rules as guidance.
