Three Piano Exercises You'll Love (Exercises, Inventions and Ideas, Part 1)
This piano tutorial features three piano exercises that will really help you to develop your skills on the piano keyboard — in particular your skill at dynamic (playing the piano loud and soft), your expression, legato, staccato, keyboard improvisation, finger management and one or two other things like pedalling and chord evenness.

As I explain in the tutorial, this is the first instalment of a new piano learning project I’m creating called Exercises, Inventions and Ideas. I’m going to release a new instalment monthly between mid 2023 and late 2024. Exercises, Inventions and Ideas is designed to help adult piano learners, and self-teachers in particular, develop some of the skills they miss out on, and which are extensively covered in the kind of traditional piano lessons given to kids. Rather than just including a big list of piano scales and arpeggios (though scales and arpeggios are cool!) I’ve tried to make the exercises interesting and engaging, and you’ll often have to use your own musical creativity. Too many adult piano learners have a “press this key then that key” mentality when it comes to learning the instrument, and that can lead to frustration and dead, mechanical playing. Exercises, Inventions and Ideas is designed to help piano students push past those problems.
This first instalment is open access, and there’ll probably be another open access one later in 2023. However, most instalments will only be available to my Patreon subscribers in the first instance (once the project is finished I’ll wrap all the instalments together and put them on sale to everyone, rather as a I did with my very successful Piano Packs series).
If you’d like to support my Patreon piano crowdfunding page, head over to https://www.patreon.com/billhilton — we have a great community of piano learners over there, and in addition to getting all the instalments of Exercises, Inventions and Ideas as they are released, you also get a bunch of other Patreon-exclusive stuff AND priority support from me personally.
I hope you enjoy these piano exercises - please let me know what you think in the comments!
