This tutorial walks you through a piano improvisation on a given chord progression in the key of F major. In it, I demonstrate an improvisation and take a detailed look at how I’ve put it together. Along the way I deal with some important concepts in jazz piano like chord extension and substitution, and discuss how you can use different scales - and your ear - to come up with a satisfying right hand melody.
If you’re just starting out with jazz piano, this tutorial should give you a handy overview of some of the important skills before you dive into learning in more detail, perhaps via my Jazz Piano For Beginners series, which you can find here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLpOuhygfD7QmN-lQYtSAULCvdomKraZ1S
For the purposes of this tutorial I’m assuming that you have a grasp of basic piano chords. If you're a beginner when it comes to this kind of piano playing, or your chord knowledge is a bit shaky, check out this tutorial: https://youtu.be/C1i-cFx7__M
