Interleaved practice
Interleaved practice is a really handy way of developing your improvisation and songwriting skills on the piano or, indeed, any instrument. Basically it involves alternating short sessions of practising scored music that demands precision and expression (typically something classical, the example I use here is from J.S. Bach's Well Tempered Clavier) with sessions of practising improv and/or exploratory composition.
