A Beautiful, Dark Minor Chord Progression
Minor chord progressions can be really beautiful, and they offer a ton of opportunities for improvising and songwriting on the piano or keyboard. The chords in the minor key progression we’re looking at in this tutorial really put it on a kind of borderline between major and minor (there are actually more major chords in it than minor chords) but it has an overall dark, minor sound.
In the tutorial we look at how to play the progression in a fairly basic way on the piano, using block chords and broken chords, and then I demonstrate how you can use some more advanced techniques in a minor progression, like chord extension and suspension, and rhythmic anticipation. We also discuss how to use the sustain pedal to create a rich, beautiful, ambient sound and how to voice the chords to bring out the character of the progression.
