Abandoned City in the Forest | Destination Adventure
I have been fortunate to travel many places in my life, but few compare to the experience of traveling in the north. You can take a cruise, or fly in and rent a car, but driving to Alaska through Canada is really the best way. The road conditions are very poor, but traffic doesn't exist. Services and emanates are incredibly limited, but the views are pristine and untouched. The drive from Anchorage to Tok should have been about seven or eight hours, but for me it was three days. I couldn't seem to drive more than ten minutes without stopping to film or fly the drone, and I am so excited to share that experience with all of you.
Alaska has been such an amazing experience for me in the Motorhome. Due to breakdowns and timing, I haven't been able to see as much as I hoped, but what I found far surpassed what I expected. Even just in Whittier alone we found so many amazing places, and the wilderness hot tub was just icing on the cake. My final week in Whittier, I started to see hints of the fall colours, but I had no idea what was waiting for me on the other side of the tunnel. I think I put more flight time on the drone in those three days than ever before. Leaving Whittier, I knew I had a lot of miles to cover, but I didn't expect to find an abandoned lodge or a ghost town.
Bear Flats Lodge, was a real surprise to find, and a delight to explore, but it is sad to see a place surrounded with so much beauty but left to rot. Continuing south from the lodge, I was very happy to see on the map, Silver City. This is a location that has been on my radar since last summer. Neither of these locations were a planned stop, because originally I was planning to take the Top of the World Highway again to experience the fall colours, but it is now closed until spring. Lucky for me, the rout through Haines Junction is nearly as beautiful, and full of great adventures. I wish I had planned ahead, and researched more of Silver City, but that is the reality of remote travel.
